“Take a simple idea and take it seriously.”

It’s an old Charlie Munger line, but it’s a good one. And I think it may be more relevant now, in the AI era, than ever before.

What I mean is that AI has already won the intellectual argument at most organizations. Almost all leaders believe it will change how their companies operate. Almost all leaders believe it’s important. The question now is whether they believe it enough to let it change how their organizations allocate time, money, authority, and attention.

Taking an idea seriously is different from simply believing it. You can agree with an idea, repeat it in meetings, put it in a strategy deck, and tell your board it matters, but none of that necessarily changes anything unless you take the idea seriously. This means pairing it with action.

You can tell when an organization takes an idea seriously because it begins reorganizing around it. Time is protected. Budget is authorized. Authority gets assigned. Governance gets built. In short, the work gets shaped around the idea rather than squeezed in after everything else is done.

Taking AI seriously means prioritizing the effort it takes and understanding that doing too much at once can be as detrimental as doing nothing at all. Choose one or two areas of work that deserve attention. Start with a real business problem. Assign an accountable owner. Give people protected time. Establish the tools and guardrails. Define what should change and how the results will be evaluated.

Most importantly, create a mechanism for capturing what the organization learns. Decide what worked, what did not, what needs to be revised, and what deserves to be repeated or scaled.

Taking AI seriously means moving it out of the abstract and into the way the organization actually operates. Most companies have already decided AI matters, but the ones that benefit from it will be the ones willing to act like it does.
